The Putna-Vrancea Natural Park was established by Government Decision no. 2151/2004, with the main purpose of protecting and preserving the natural landscape and providing opportunities for recreation and education to the public. It is part of the IUCN category V, i.e. a protected area intended mainly for terrestrial landscape conservation and recreation.
The main purpose of the park is to protect and conserve some landscape ensembles where the interaction between human activities and nature has created an area with an important biological and cultural value. The park also encourages research and educational activities.
According to Order no. 1964/2007, the park was included in the Natura 2000 network, becoming a site of community importance ROSCI0208 Putna-Vrancea. Its limit coincides with that of the Putna-Vrancea Natural Park. It is administered by RNP Romsilva.
The internal zoning of the park complies with the provisions of GEO 57/2007 and includes areas of strict protection, areas of integral protection, areas of sustainable management and areas of sustainable development. Each zone has strict rules about what human activities are allowed.
The strict protection zone is in the southern part of the park and includes Goru Peak, where human activities are prohibited except for research and ecotourism. The areas of integral protection include the most valuable assets of the natural heritage, exploitation or construction activities being prohibited, with some exceptions.
The sustainable management areas, with an area of 29,927.47 ha, allow scientific, educational and ecotourism activities, but with strict restrictions. Traditional activities and forestry work are also allowed in these areas, but strict regulations must be followed to protect biodiversity.
Sustainable development zones allow the development of tourist infrastructure, but with respect to the principles of sustainable use of natural resources. In these areas, traditional human activities and eco-friendly economic activities are encouraged.
The management objectives of the Putna-Vrancea Natural Park include conserving species and habitats, protecting the diversity of the landscape and habitats, promoting sustainable tourism, and educating the public about the importance of nature conservation.
The park includes six protected areas, each with a distinct natural and historical value, including Groapa cu Pini, Strâmtura-Coza, Goru Mountain and Tişiţei Valley.
The park is located in the central-northwestern sector of the Vrancea Mountains and covers an area of 38,204 hectares, representing 41.32% of the mountain area of Vrancea County. The relief varies, from steps descending from west to east, forming a vast natural amphitheater.
