The wooden church "Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică" in Putna, also known as the wooden church "Dragoș Vodă" or the Putna Hermitage, is an Orthodox church that, according to tradition, dates back to the second half of the 14th century. Initially, this church was built in the town of Volovăț, but was later moved to the village of Putna, part of the commune of the same name, located in Suceava County. Currently, the church is located in the cemetery of the village of Putna, at a distance of approximately one kilometer from the Putna Monastery, and its patron saint is the feast of the Entry of the Virgin Mary into the Church, celebrated on November 21.
The eastern part of the church dates back to the beginning of the 15th century and, according to tradition, was brought by Prince Ștefan cel Mare from Volovăț. This portion represents the oldest wooden church from the medieval era known in Romania that has been preserved to this day. Due to its remarkable antiquity and its archaic plan, the building has an exceptional value within the heritage of medieval architecture in Romania and even abroad.
The church construction is made up of three parts that were added successively, each reflecting the characteristics of the era in which it was built. The oldest part, so old that its history is partly intertwined with legend, has been preserved to this day and is considered a unique example of Romanian medieval architecture.
According to Moldavian tradition, the wooden church from Putna was originally built in Volovăț during the reign of Dragoș Vodă, around the middle of the 14th century. Regarding the exact year of construction, there are two different versions: the year 1353 is mentioned by the hieromonk of Putna, Sevastian Georgiescu, in his manuscript of July 4, 1853 entitled "Description for the church in the village of Putna, called the old monastery of Putna which now serves as an ecclesiastical parish"; another date, 1346, is indicated by Dimitrie Dan in his monographic work on Putna, published in 1905.
